What an outstanding, highly informative, and extraordinarily positive article/interview. Many thanks John, and Greg. I have followed the research and development of cool surfaces since the 1980s when Lawrence Berkeley National Lab scientists Art Rosenfeld and Hashem Akbari initiated the first research on cooler roofs and pavements (and later, vehicle colors). One of Art's last publications on cool surfaces, co-authored with Hashem and Surabi Menon, "Global Cooling: Increasing World-wide Urban Albedos to Offset CO2. " Their findings: "our preliminary estimate is that increasing the world-wide albedos of urban roofs and paved surfaces will induce a negative radiative forcing on the earth equivalent to removing ~22 - 40 Gt of CO2 from the atmosphere. Since, 55% of the emitted CO2 remains in the atmosphere, removal of 22 - 40 Gt of CO2 from the atmosphere is equivalent to reducing global CO2 emissions by 40 - 73 Gt. At ~$25/tonne of CO2, a 40 - 73 Gt CO2 emission reduction from changing the albedo of roofs and paved surfaces is worth about $1,000B to 1800B." Great thanks are due to Greg Kats and his SSC colleagues for catalyzing actual implementation of this amazing opportunity by cities, which is clearly the least-cost-and-risk opportunity for "geoengineering" CDR (carbon dioxide removal).
