2024 marks my 50th year professionally engaged in opening up the business world to the environmental and sustainability agendas. And, inshallah, I will also hit 75 in June. As part of the process of working out what comes next, I have completed my 21st book, Tickling Sharks: How We Sold Business on Sustainability, which will be published by Fast Company Press in May.
Once the book is out, I plan to post extracts here - as well as on our Volans website and my personal website. In the meantime, I am planning a ‘Blueprints’ discovery process to run through 2024, tapping into thinkers and practitioners at the leading edge of system change.
In the spirit of my Volans role as ‘Chief Pollinator’, an early component will involve a learning journey to New Mexico (hopefully) and California (definitely) in April-May, with the logistics still being organised. Once they are in place, I will share the details here.
The five main themes of the discovery process are:
how the science fiction community sees tomorrow’s systemic solutions evolving
trends in younger people’s views of today’s system - and their visions of future ones
the science of scaling systemic sustainability solutions
market-based ecosystem regeneration
potential future application of AI to expand our imaginations and horizons
If you have any suggestions as to people we should involve in the process, under any of the five headings, please share your thoughts via john@volans.com. Once the process is properly under way, I plan to post regular updates here.
Really looking forward to your insights on those five main themes John!
The power of AI to expand our imagination, is already used daily. I only limit my own use considering how much harm in terms of stratospheric emissions, each AI interaction costs. So we better make an excellent use of AI ... and then rethink our energy sector.
I do think that energy rethink might highlighted as perhaps a sixth theme? Or as part of the 4th curent theme of ecosystem regeneration?
Thanks to those who have already proposed (mainly on LinkedIn and X) initiatives I should track - and placed I should visit. Keep the suggestions coming! Will also post some of the most interesting ones here.
